Within the application of QI to seismic reservoir characterization, there is a need to improve and correct the standard underdetermined/ambiguous AVO inversion estimates of key seismic petrophysical parameters and rock properties that control hydrocarbon producibility and layer or fracture induced anisotropy.

A new Bayesian inference solution termed Direct Probabilistic Anisotropic AVO Inversion provides a framework where these issues can be addressed. The application of a general and flexible probabilistic framework a rigorous propagation of uncertainties, where prior knowledge from multiple anisotropic elastic and lithofacies domains can be easily integrated, provides an uplift in resolution to resolve ambiguities and VTI anisotropy related errors.

The results from implementing Direct Probabilistic Anisotropic AVO Inversion will illustrate the method’s ability to provide robust estimates of the components of these anisotropic facies, which can be used in drilling decision-making and risk analysis.
